SEO in the age of answers

AI search didn't kill SEO. It killed the version of SEO that was already dying — and rewarded the version that always worked.

Every year since 2012, someone has declared SEO dead, and every year the businesses with strong organic foundations quietly collect the cheapest customers in their category. AI answers are the newest executioner — and the same pattern is holding.

What actually died is commodity content: the 1,500-word listicle written to fill a keyword slot. Language models generate that for free now, and search engines know it. What survives — what gets cited by the machines themselves — is the content with something to say: proprietary data, real expertise, genuine answers.

The playbook shifts from ranking to being referenced: structured, quotable pages; entities and authorship machines can verify; technical foundations that make the site legible to every crawler, human or model. Optimize for answers, wherever they render.

The strategic logic is unchanged: search is where demand goes to declare itself. The interface will keep mutating — links, snippets, answers, agents. The demand underneath doesn't. Build for that, and the interface changes become weather, not climate.
